Anti-SLAPP legislation was recently introduced in the North Carolina House of Representatives. The bill, H746, was introduced by Representative , D-Buncombe and Representative Susi Hamilton, D-New Hanover. This important legislation protects North Carolinians’ First Amendment right to petition their government. The legislation was introduced largely in response to SLAPPs filed by cement companies against citizens who spoke out about the plans to build cement plants near their homes. In both cases, the citizens voiced concerns about the health effects and environmental impact associated with building the plants.
